FDLE investigates woman's death after Miami-Dade deputy's shooting

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office identified a woman who died after a deputy shot her on Saturday as Karen Ivette Gomez.

According to the M-DSO, Gomez was 52, and the deputy shot her at about 4:05 p.m. on Saturday at Northwest 55th Avenue and 189th Street.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was investigating the deputy’s shooting.

Deputies reported responding to a report of a woman who was hurting herself with a knife.

“Deputies attempted to establish a dialogue with the female,” Detective Samantha Choon wrote in a statement.

A deputy deployed a Taser before the shooting, according to Choon.

“During the altercation, a deputy discharged their service weapon, striking the female,” Choon wrote.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded and rushed her to a helicopter, and flew her to the hospital.

“She later succumbed to her injuries. No deputies were injured,” Choon wrote. “The investigation remains ongoing.”
