Senate committee to vote on Scott’s shark-related bill

Lawmakers to vote on shark-related law

WASHINGTON — A U.S. Senate committee met on Wednesday morning, and the agenda included a bill related to shark interactions with fisheries.

U.S. Sens. Rick Scott and Brian Schatz, a Hawaiian Democrat concerned about depredation, introduced the Supporting the Health of Aquatic Systems through Research, Knowledge, and Enhanced Dialogue Act on July 16.

After a second reading, the Senate referred the SHARKED bill to establish a task force within the Department of Commerce to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

If the bill passes, the task force would study shark behavior at the fisheries and make recommendations. The version of the bill in the House passed in January.
