Trumps celebrated White House Christmas before heading to Mar-a-Lago for holiday

Christmas celebrated at White House

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump spent Christmas in Mar-a-Lago, but before leaving for their winter White House, the first family decked the halls at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

“It is beautiful, not too cold,” President Trump said at the lighting of the National Christmas Tree, his first since returning to office.

“As a nation we have much to be grateful for. This holiday season, our border is secure, our spirit is restored,” President Trump said.

While back at the White House, hundreds volunteered to help put up decorations for this year’s theme, “Home Is Where the Heart Is.”

The display includes a gingerbread White House and 51 Christmas trees throughout the residence, including the official tree, harvested from a farm in Sidney, Michigan.

Each room was designed and curated under the direction of First Lady Melania Trump.

“Enjoy the time, wishing you a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year and all the best to your families,” Melania Trump said.

Leading up to Dec. 25, the first lady visited the Children’s National Hospital and then joined Santa, drawing cheers.

Santa left his sleigh at the North Pole to take part in a Toys for Tots event at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, where Melania Trump helped collect gifts for children.

“This wonderful adventure is filled with Christmas sparkle and lots of love,” Melania Trump said.
