Dolphins put on the pads for training camp as injury bug continues to plague secondary

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins put on full pads Tuesday for the first time this training camp, embracing the heat, the contact, and the grind of getting back into football shape.

“It felt good to get out there and bump heads a little bit,” said linebacker Tyrel Dodson after a steamy session that saw temperatures hover near 100 degrees. “I ain’t felt that before.”

It’s been nearly seven months since the pads were last on, so the team is easing back into full-contact work with a strategic approach.

For linebacker Bradley Chubb, who missed time last season, the return to padded practice had extra meaning.

“It’s just a blessing to be back in these pads, man, and just running around with the guys and feeling that tired, feeling dead tired, and having to get back out and go through another team period,” Chubb said. “That’s what I missed, and that’s what we’re building toward. I’m excited about it.”

The defense continues to generate buzz under second-year defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver.

“I think he’s finding his groove,” said Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. “There’s exponential return on that year two because you can’t hide from that consistency. I think guys trust his intentions, which are pure, more and more.”

While the defensive front has drawn early praise, the secondary continues to face challenges.

Safety Ashton Davis went down with what appeared to be a lower leg injury during Tuesday’s practice.

Teammates were seen consoling him before he limped off the field. He later returned to the sidelines wearing a walking boot and using crutches.

The team has yet to provide an official update on his injury.
