DETROIT — Meeting with reporters as the team begins preparing for their second exhibition game against the Detroit Lions on Saturday afternoon, Miami Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel provided injury updates on key players.
On the offensive side of the football, the team signed running backs Mike Boone and Aaron Shampklin, while placing running back Alexander Mattison on the season-ending injured reserve list.
Mattison sustained a neck injury this past Sunday after being tackled on a 21-yard pass play. He remained on the field for several minutes while being attended to by the training staff before walking off under his own power.
He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital in Chicago, where the surgery took place.
“I know that he’s doing well, and it’s not this season but it’s not career-ending,” McDaniel said on Tuesday.
McDaniel also said that wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, who missed the team’s preseason opener, are both “day-to-day,” adding that he wants to see how their bodies respond throughout the week.
Defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver was without one of his top pass-rushers, Jaelan Phillips, in the game against the Chicago Bears.
Like his star-studded receiving corps, McDaniel also listed Phillips as “day-to-day,” along with defensive back Elijah Campbell, who exited the game early.
The coach also shared how veteran tight end Darren Waller is doing.
“Joint practices out of retirement – no, it’s not the week,” McDaniel said.
In simpler terms, Dolphins fans will have to wait at least another week for Waller’s return.
