PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar discussed the ongoing struggle to oust Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and her role in supporting opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who recently received the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts.
Salazar appeared on Local 10’s This Week in South Florida with Glenna Milberg on Sunday.
Salazar, who joined other South Florida lawmakers in Oslo to support Machado, recounted a powerful moment when she finally met Machado in person after months of working to help her cause.
“I’ve never seen her in person. I have spoken to her through satellite, trying to help her cause,” Salazar said. “I’m so proud to have done something to help the Venezuelans and the Western Hemisphere find freedom and peace.”
Salazar also discussed the broader geopolitical context, highlighting the U.S. military’s ongoing efforts against Maduro’s regime, including operations to curb Venezuela’s illegal oil trade.
We’re not invading Venezuela and taking out the legitimate president. What we’re doing is that we’re removing someone who’s on the list of terrorist organizations, someone who’s on the list of transnational criminal organizations," she said.
“He was indicted in 2020 in this country by a federal grand jury for drug trafficking. He is the head of the Suns cartel, so we’re not dealing with a good boy here who has been fleeting,” Salazar added.
