Sept. 2: South Florida heats up, but with less stickiness in the air

We’re heating up today across South Florida, but with a little less stickiness in the air. Thanks to counterclockwise winds around a low-pressure system and a front stretched over our region, we’ve tapped into a northwesterly wind flow. That’s keeping conditions drier, less humid, and lowering our rain chances compared to what we’ve been dealing with lately.

Still, the heat is on. Afternoon highs reach 93° today, so don’t let the lower humidity fool you — you’ll want to stay cool and hydrated if you’re spending time outdoors.

Big Changes Ahead

By Wednesday, our pattern shifts once again. The front slips away and moisture returns in full force. Expect higher rain chances beginning midweek, with scattered showers and thunderstorms building each afternoon and continuing into the rest of the week. This increase in storms will help take the edge off our temperatures, with rain-cooled air possibly keeping some areas in the upper 80s later this week.

Watching the Tropics

We’re also keeping an eye on the Atlantic. The National Hurricane Center has highlighted an area of disturbed weather deep in the basin that’s moving westward. It currently has a 60% chance of developing into a tropical system over the next several days.

If it strengthens, it could become Tropical Storm Gabriella, which would be the seventh named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.

For now, there’s no immediate threat to South Florida or the U.S. Long-range forecast models remain split, with some showing the system curving back out to sea while others keep it on a more westerly track. There’s plenty of time for changes, and we’ll be watching it closely.

Stay tuned for updates as we head into what’s typically the peak of hurricane season.
