Melissa intensifies to Category 5 on path to slam into Jamaica as island’s strongest recorded storm

Hurricane Melissa strengthened into a Category 5 storm Monday as it drew closer to Jamaica, where forecasters said it would unleash catastrophic flooding, landslides and widespread damage. It would be the strongest hurricane to hit the island since record-keeping began in 1851.

Your Monday is starting off mostly dry after the weekend of downpours sparked flash flooding across parts of northern Broward and West Palm Beach. Scattered showers are expected later today and some storms could cause more flooding concerns for those areas. This is all ahead of a cold front that arrives tomorrow. Once the front clears, we are expecting cooler, drier, less humid conditions to arrive. A reinforcing front will move in by Wednesday bringing the coldest air of the season for the end of the week.
