HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — South Floridians are mourning the loss of Hulk Hogan, the larger-than-life wrestling icon who died Thursday at age 71 after suffering cardiac arrest at his Clearwater home.
Paramedics responded to Hogan’s residence early Thursday following a medical emergency call. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Born Terry Bollea, Hogan became a global superstar in the 1980s, helping transform the World Wrestling Federation into an entertainment juggernaut.
With his trademark mustache, bandana and bold charisma, he inspired generations of fans — including many in South Florida, where he made regular appearances in recent years.
“Say your prayers, eat your vitamins and drink your milk…” was among his most famous mantras.
One of his most iconic moments came in 1987, when he body-slammed Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III — a career-defining feat for the WWE Hall of Famer.
More recently, Hogan remained a familiar face around South Florida.
Last summer, he launched his beer brand, “Real American,” with a stop at Big Daddy’s Liquors in Hollywood.
“Oh I mean the first reaction was, you know, obviously sadness,” said David Alfaro, store manager, recalling the day Hogan visited. “He was just very nice, like a very nice guy when I spoke with him. He was always like, ‘Hey brother, what’s going on!’”
Hogan also delved into reality TV and conservative politics, speaking at the 2024 Republican National Convention.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis offered condolences Thursday.
“As someone who grew up in West Central Florida, I was sad to see the news that Hulk Hogan passed away today. We were with him just a couple months ago. My kids got to meet him and everything,” DeSantis said.
“When it’s in your blood, you’ll do about anything to make it and get the job done,” Hogan said in a past interview.
Hogan’s manager said he died around his loved ones.
He is survived by his wife, children, and millions of fans across Florida and beyond who watched him turn wrestling into pop culture history.
