Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Ovo’ comes to South Florida

Beloved Cirque du Soleil show returns to South Florida

MIAMI — Cirque du Soleil is returning to South Florida with the rebirth of a classic: “Ovo.”

Ovo, which means egg in Portuguese, is an entrancing love story told through the world of insects in a whimsical, vibrantly colorful way.

“The show was created in 2009, 15 years after being on the road. We needed to give the stage a little bit of TLC, so we actually changed the entire stage itself, designed a new set,” publicist Janie Mallet said. “Designed new props, the big flowers, the plants, the leaves, are all additions. The essence remains. We’re still in the life of bugs. We still have that joy and that warmth and that vibrant universe.”

If you’ve ever enjoyed the Cirque experience, then you know you are transported to a world of spectacle and magic. But what you don’t see is the painstaking process that goes into creating the most unique shows on Earth.

Mallet said the show features 100 people from 25 different nationalities.

“And that includes the 53 artists that you see on stage,” she said. “So if you do the math, we’re basically one, one. So one onstage and one backstage.”

They are world-class athletes who have dedicated their lives to the craft and the magic of Cirque.

“So we do our whole act with the music, with the lights in the arena, because sometimes they’re different, depending on the arena we go to,” performer Nathan Shuh said during a rehearsal at the Kaseya Center in Miami. “And ours went really well today.”

And it wouldn’t be a Cirque show without impeccable costumes that bring characters to life with acute attention to detail and a community of technical professionals who understand that unrelenting perfection is the cornerstone of Cirque’s lexicon.

“The staff that takes care of the visa, the immigration, the transportation, the lodging, catering, there’s just so much logistics that goes on to putting a show of this magnitude and bringing it around the world with talent and cast and crew from so many nationalities,” Mallet said.

Shows kicked off Thursday at the Kaseya Center, running through Sunday. The show will then be at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise through Aug. 24.
