Michelin-starred Japanese chef celebrates Nigiri Nights in Coral Gables

Nigiri Nights at Shingo run through September on Tuesday and Wednesday

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Shingo Akikuni is celebrating this season’s last Nigiri Nights, a 16-course makizushi, on Tuesday and Wednesday nights this September.

The fourth-generation sushi chef from Osaka, Japan, has been shining at a premium sushi omakase restaurant in Coral Gables that opened in 2023 and earned a Michelin star for its high-quality cooking in 2024.

Akikuni sources almost all of his fish from Japan, and with the help of Kenzie Motai, Akikuni’s managing partner, they aim to treat every guest as a VIP.

“We serve just 28 people a night, so we try to personalize every single service for every single guest that we have,” Motai said.

The spacious L-shaped 14-seat counter at the historic La Palma building at 112 Alhambra Circle opens from 6 to 11 p.m., from Tuesday to Saturday.

“Experiencing a dinner like this in a restaurant we actually built in Japan is something I think is actually very unique in Miami,” Motai said.

The restaurant also has a gallery with rotating exhibits. The works of Yoshiaki Dobuchi, a master ceramic artist, were recently on display.

The seatings are at 6 p.m. and at 9 p.m. Nigiri Nights are $180 per person. For more information, an etiquette guide, and reservations, visit this page.
