The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced nominations for the 98th Academy Awards on Thursday, delivering a morning of record-breaking achievements, major milestones and notable snubs as Oscar season officially began.
Ryan Coogler’s vampire epic “Sinners” led all films with a record-setting 16 nominations, the most ever earned by a single movie. Star Michael B. Jordan scored his first career Oscar nomination for best actor.
The category remains highly competitive, with Timothée Chalamet earning his second nomination in two years and Leonardo DiCaprio landing his sixth for Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” which followed closely behind with 13 nominations.
In the best actress race, Emma Stone returned to contention for “Bulgonia,” vying for what could be her third Oscar win. She faces competition from Jessie Buckley (“Hamnet”) and Renate Reinsve (“Sentimental Value”).
First-time nominees dominated the supporting actress category, including Elle Fanning (“Sentimental Value”) and Wunmi Mosaku (“Sinners”), while Teyana Taylor drew attention following her recent Golden Globe win for “One Battle After Another.”
The best supporting actor field mixed rising stars and veterans, with Jacob Elordi nominated for Netflix’s “Frankenstein” and Delroy Lindo for “Sinners.”
The morning’s biggest surprise was the shutout of box office hit “Wicked.” Despite its success, stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were omitted from acting categories, and the film missed a best picture nomination.
The best picture lineup also includes “F1,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” and indie favorite “Train Dreams.”
