MEDLEY, Fla. — Medley police arrested a man they said posed as a wireless company representative and stole from a senior working at a warehouse in the town.
Investigators said 29-year-old restaurant server Brandon Tabares-Beltran pretended to be T-Mobile salesman “Pedro” and walked into Interport International Logistics, located at 8580 NW 72nd St., on Sept. 2 and found an unwitting victim.
Police said “Pedro” gained the trust of a 76-year-old man at the business and sold him a cellphone and a router.
Six days later, Tabares-Beltran came back to “connect” the devices, claiming “he needed access to the business’s Wi-Fi and to the victim’s laptop in order to complete the setup,” an arrest report from the Medley Police Department states.
“Through deception, (Tabares-Beltran) obtained access to the victim’s laptop and subsequently accessed (his) online banking account. The victim had his banking passwords saved on the bank’s login page,” the report states. “Without the victim’s knowledge or consent, (Tabares-Beltran) initiated three separate Zelle transfers of $500 each, totaling $1,500, to an account associated with (himself).”
Authorities said Tabares-Beltran also asked for the victim’s driver’s license and bank card information; he then wrote down the name “Pedro” and gave the victim a bogus phone number.
Police said they went to Tabares-Beltran’s home on Southwest 24th Street in Miami-Dade’s Westchester area on Wednesday to arrest him on charges of elderly exploitation, identity theft, grand theft and offenses against computer users.
As of Thursday morning, the Colombian national’s bond was listed as “to be set” in county jail records. He was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
