BRICKELL, Fla. — Eating a sushi roll is easier than making one — but the process can be just as fun.
Komodo in Brickell, known for its high energy, celebrity sightings and signature Southeast Asian flavors, has added a new hands-on experience for guests: sushi-making classes.
Komodo recently launched the monthly classes to give guests a chance to learn the art of sushi from the chefs themselves.
“We were really looking for something that would excite everyone’s senses like an experience,” said Joshua Brown, vice president of food and beverage operations. “We were like really honing in on what kind of experience we could bring to our guest that would be unique and fun at the same time.”
Rolling sushi, it turns out, is harder than it looks.
From spreading the rice to mastering the tight roll, every step takes precision.
Tony Mai, Komodo’s corporate sushi chef, guided participants through the steps with patience.
The finished product made the effort worth it.
Brown said the classes are designed to evolve over time.
“The classes do evolve slightly to keep it interesting so you can participate in multiple classes,” he said.
Up to 20 people can take part in the monthly sessions. At the end, guests can choose between a Komodo tasting experience or a full sushi tasting.
“We have different programs that we’re working on,” Brown said. “We’re toying with the idea of doing something around the Peking duck, dumpling class or dumpling making class.”
