PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. ā A report released Wednesday reveals the healthiest, and least healthy counties in Florida.
According to research by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe all ranked in the top ten out of the stateās 67 counties.
Monroe was ranked the fourth healthiest county in Florida, Miami-Dade sixth and Broward tenth.
āSo we measure health in its totality, so we look at health behaviors, things like smoking, tobacco use and access to exercise opportunities. Certainly one of the strengths in these three counties is that the vast majority of people in these three counties have access to places where they can exercise,ā said Sheri Johnson, Director of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.
The key focus of this yearās study was ācivic healthā, which includes the opportunity to participate in the decisions made to promote policies that support wellness.
The report found that our area continues to face challenges in meeting the needs of low-income children.
And birth control pills could soon be easier to buy for millions of women.
FDA advisers will meet in May to discuss whether a certain pill can be sold over the counter.
The medication thatāll be up for debate is called āO-Pill,ā which is currently approved to prevent pregnancy in the U.S. but is only available with a prescription.
If the āO-Pillā gets the greenlight, it would be the first birth control pill to be available over the counter in the U.S.
This comes as reproductive advocates push to make abortion pills more accessible after the reversal of Roe v. Wade.
