Vitamin D levels suffer during winter, so expert recommends checkups

Vitamin D level checkups are important, doctor says

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — Dr. Neha Vyas, a family medicine physician with the Cleveland Clinic, said Vitamin D level checkups are important.

It’s .especially important to talk to a doctor about it during and after the winter when sunbathing isn’t an option, according to Vyas.

“Less sunshine means less vitamin D,” Vyas said.

She listed the symptoms of a Vitamin D deficiency to include fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness, and mood changes.

“If you are having any of those, then talk to your doctor about maybe getting checked,” Vyas said.

The older you get, the more important this becomes. Vyas said seniors need help with this, just in case they do need supplements.

“We don’t want them to fracture a bone, so it’s important to have strong, healthy bones, especially in the winter,” Vyas said.
