DAVIE, Fla. — A shooting in the parking lot of a beauty school in Davie Tuesday afternoon left one person dead and another in critical condition, authorities said.
Officers with the Davie Police Department said they responded to a shooting call at the Aveda Institute, located at 4186 S. University Drive, just north of Griffin Road, shortly after 2 p.m.
DPD spokeswoman Julia Ross said officers found two victims with gunshot wounds in a parking lot outside of the beauty school.
Ross said one victim, whose age and gender were not released, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The second person was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sky 10 flew over the scene, where officers focused on a white car in the Aveda parking lot before it was covered with a brown tarp.
Police have not identified the parties involved, confirmed which victim was deceased, or disclosed the relationship between the two individuals.
Detectives are interviewing witnesses who were outside the parking lot at the time. They also confirmed that the incident poses no ongoing threat to the community and that no additional suspects are being sought.
Several nearby schools, including Knit-T-All Preparatory School next door and St. David Catholic Church and School just north of the beauty school, were briefly placed on lockdown while a search was conducted. The lockdown has since been lifted.
Davie resident Cindy Santaita said the shooting has left many people, including students, shaken.
“All of a sudden, in front of Aveda, I see all the students out in the front and they’re crying. And they’re upset,” she said. “I feel really bad for whoever was hurt there, and their poor parents who have to get this news.”
Traffic in the area was temporarily shut down but has reopened, though drivers may experience some congestion due to the earlier closure.
No other details about the shooting were immediately released.
