PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — Michelle Doyle said she has been giving it her best during cardiac rehab workouts at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines.
Doyle, 70, has been meeting regularly at the gym with Emily Herrera-Cruz, a clinical exercise physiologist at Memorial Hospital West.
“Before, I wasn’t able to do a lot of these things,” said Doyle, who has undergone four heart catheterizations.
Doyle also has heart stents, tiny tubes that are inserted into a narrowed coronary artery to restore blood flow to the heart.
“If I am going to enjoy my retirement, I am going to enjoy it watching these kids succeed,” Doyle said about watching her nephews play sports.
Herrera-Cruz monitors her heart vitals during the workouts designed to help her recover and prevent future problems.
“I feel like God is with me. My family is with me, and my extended Memorial family is with me,” Doyle said.
Herrera-Cruz said cardiac rehab typically consists of 36 sessions over three months, and includes lessons on nutrition and stress management.
