PANAMA CITY, Fla. – A judge has sentenced a charter boat captain in Panama City to a month in jail for poisoning and shooting dolphins.
Federal prosecutors said Zackery Barfield was frustrated with dolphins eating red snapper from the fishing lines of his clients.
Prosecutors said Barfield took matters into his own hands and placed methomyl inside baitfish to poison the dolphins.
Barfield also shot at least five dolphins with a 12-gauge shotgun, killing at least one of them.
Authorities said he poisoned between 24 and 70 dolphins, likely causing more deaths.
