LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. — The Broward Sheriff’s Office released information on Monday about the fatal shooting of a transgender woman on Friday night in Lauderdale Lakes.
In a statement, BSO deputies identified Maurice “Girlalala” Harrison as a murder victim and Shanoyd Whyte Jr. as the murder suspect.
“Whyte Jr. told detectives he and the victim have been in a relationship for several years,” Miranda Grossman, a spokeswoman for BSO, wrote in the statement.
Harrison, 21, of Pompano Beach, and Whyte, 25, of Lauderdale Lakes, were inside Whyte’s car when they got into an argument and a fight, according to BSO.
“At some point, the victim was shot while sitting in the car,” Grossman wrote.
BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue personnel responded shortly after 6:50 p.m. on Friday at the 3300 block of Northwest 37 Street.
Deputies found Harrison “in the front passenger seat of a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds,” and paramedics took her to the Broward Health Medical Center, where she died, according to BSO.
“A firearm was located,” Grossman wrote.
Deputies arrested Whyte, and correctional deputies booked him at the Broward County Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale, where he remained on Monday afternoon without bond. He faced a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm.
