Broward starts new project against beach erosion

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Broward County’s new restoration project involves a 7.1-acre sand trap on the north side of the Port Everglades Entrance Channel.

Through the movement and transport of the sand every four years, the project will protect the shoreline in Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach, and Hollywood.

“We have a dredge that’s working offshore, and it will be extracting rock and sand materials from the bottom as we work to construct the sand trap,” said Jennifer Jurado, the county’s director of environmental planning and community resilience.

Broward County Mayor Beam Furr and Monica Cepero, the county’s administrator, celebrated the beginning of the project as historic.

It took county officials 30 years to move forward with the planning, design, and permitting required, and they aim to complete it in 2027.
