Thanksgiving-related travel kicks off with record highs expected

MIA and FLL rank 15 in the nation on Tuesday afternoon on FlightAware’s Misery Map

Thanksgiving-related travel: TSA expects to screen 640,000 at Miami International Airport

Thanksgiving is on Thursday, and this year officials expect more domestic travelers than usual on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday.

The American Automobile Association projected 81.8 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home from Tuesday to Dec. 1. That is 1.6 million more travelers than last year.

At Miami International Airport, Daniel Valez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration, said TSA expects to screen 640,000 from “Monday to Monday.”

On Tuesday afternoon, MIA and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport ranked 15th in the country on the FlightAware’s Misery Map, which tracks delays and cancellations.

Thanksgiving-related travel: AAA forecasts record high

The Chicago O’Hare International Airport, ORD; the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and the Denver International Airport were the top three on the Misery Map.

The Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport, and the Los Angeles International Airport followed.

On Tuesday alone, the Federal Aviation Administration expected more than 52,000 domestic flights, and the TSA expects to screen about 2.7 million travelers.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently asked travelers to be more courteous with fellow travelers and dress more formally while flying after the 43-day federal government shutdown.

It appears some travelers are opting to fly less than usual. Cirium reported a 4.5% annual decrease in flight bookings, and Wanderu reported a 17% annual increase in bus and train bookings.

AAA projects that about 90% of travelers will choose road trips over flights. Car rental companies expect Wednesday to be the busiest pick-up day this week.
