MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — As post-Thanksgiving travel continued, dozens of flights had been delayed on Sunday morning at both Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Winter weather affected flights from the Midwest and the Northeast.
More than 1,400 flights were canceled across the country Sunday, according to airline officials.
Among those affected were travelers at Miami International Airport, including a Washington couple who said their Delta flight to Seattle was delayed repeatedly.
The FlightAware Misery Map, which tracks delays and cancellations, ranked Chicago O’Hare International Airport at the top.
The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, and the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport followed.
“We got our flight delayed for 17 hours,” said traveler Kristina Cascikevich. “We have a cat at home. He’s been waiting for us for almost a day.”
At Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, long lines of vehicles backed up outside the terminals as travelers arrived for flights.
“It was just stacked, back to back,” said Victor, a frequent traveler. “It can get that way sometimes, but it was a lot.”
Inside the airport, passengers described heavy crowds at security checkpoints and congested parking areas.“It’s crazy out there. Parking is crazy,” one traveler said.
Nationwide, winter weather contributed to more than 1,100 flight cancellations Sunday, adding to the delays.
Travelers inside the terminals said the busy atmosphere was impossible to miss. “It’s a little busy,” one passenger said. Another added, “It just feels crowded. I personally don’t travel around this time.”
With more disruptions expected as the holiday season continues, some travelers said they are already considering new strategies to beat the crowds later this year.
