South Florida travelers start to make their way to family for Christmas

Hundreds of flight delays ahead of Christmas in South Florida

Drivers experienced heavy traffic on Sunday outside of the international airports in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

There were hundreds of flight delays and more than a dozen cancellations at both airports.

“The best thing is to prepare, be smart, get everything done, and then we win,” said Mendel Junik, who was traveling from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to New York.

Shantell Smith had a similar message. She was traveling from FLL to Tennessee for Christmas.

“Just go to have fun and pray to God you make it back home safe,” Smith said.

FLL ranked 10th, and MIA ranked 17th in the FlightAware Misery Map for the most delays and cancellations nationwide on Sunday evening.

San Francisco International Airport was at the top. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, and Charlotte Douglas International Airport followed.
