Downtown Doral Charter Upper School celebrates champions’ parade

DORAL, Fla. — A charter school held a championship parade on Monday morning in Doral.

The Downtown Doral Charter Upper School‘s parents, students, faculty, and staff celebrated a list of victories.

“It was truly amazing recognition from the school and the city of Doral for these kids,” said Maria Franco, the school’s head cheerleading coach.

The USCA National Cheerleading champions and the FCDA Dance Competition champions were proud. Franco said they can still feel the joy of victory.

“We were like, ‘Ok, maybe top three,’ and when they announced us as winners, honestly, it was incredible,” Franco said.

Brooke Zoronel, a student and cheerleader, said their persistence and hard work paid off.

“We had a lot of practice and ups and downs, but instead of seeing it as a negative, we turned it into a positive,” Brooke said.

The Dolphins FHSAA Class 3A soccer team won the state title last month. Eduardo Jerez, a soccer player, said the 5-0 victory was a result of dedication.

“We have been training since the summer, since preseason,” Eduardo said. “No other schools were doing that.”

Javier Friguls, the school’s athletics director, said the soccer players also worked on their grades and other extracurricular activities.

“To see these kids juggle academics and athletics, many of them also play club sports, the time management they learn is something they’ll carry for the rest of their lives,” Friguls said.

Last year, two RoboFins teams won the VEX IQ South Florida Regional’s teamwork championship, and a third team placed second. A RoboFins team also ranked in the top 10 of their division at the VEX IQ World Championship.
