FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Nearly four days after suffering a gunshot wound while on duty with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois continued his recovery.
The police dog named Appie remained under veterinary care on Wednesday afternoon after undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone on Tuesday in Broward County.
“He is expected to make a full recovery,” Dr. Sagen Woolery, the emergency medicine vet caring for Appie, told Local 10 News.
Woolery said luck was on Appie’s side since the bullet that wounded him on Saturday night could have caused more damage than it did.
“We are excited to help him get back on his feet and back working again,” Woolery said.
On Monday, police officers identified the burglary suspect accused of shooting Appie in Lauderdale Manors as Christian Q. Bouie.
Appie’s K9 colleague helped police officers arrest Bouie, 30, after the shooting, and Bouie remained at the Broward County Main Jail on Wednesday.
Bouie faced four charges: Use of a deadly weapon on a police animal, interfering with law enforcement with violence, possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, and resisting arrest without violence.
