LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Magic Kingdom Park will look different in the months to come, as one of its iconic attractions, Tom Sawyer Island has now closed.
The area in Frontierland, home to Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat closed on July 7.

According to the Disney, the area was shut down to make way an expansion of Frontierland. The new Piston Peak National Park will be inspired by Disney and Pixar’s “Cars” and will transport guests into an area inspired by the American Frontier.
According to the Disney Parks Blog, the Cars crew leaves Radiator Springs behind and heads off into the frontier to put their wheels to the test. Imagineers worked with a motocross company to build a real dirt track to race around on and took that data back to begin work on creating how the ride vehicles will eventually move and race.
The park will also welcome a new nighttime spectacular, Disney Starlight on July 20. It will make its debut on MainStreet U.S.A.
Rivers of America has been a part of the Magic Kingdom Park since it opened in 1971.
