FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — During a public Broward County School Board meeting on Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale, parents lined up to speak about changes at public schools in Miramar that they say will hurt their children.
Broward County Public Schools is considering changes at Glades Middle School at 16700 SW 48 Court; Fairway Elementary School at 7850 Fairway Boulevard; and Sunshine Elementary School at 7737 La Salle Boulevard.
“We were devastated,” Cindy Kim, the parent of a Glades Middle School student, said. “Glades is a longstanding school.”
The Redefining Our Schools proposal to deal with declining enrollment includes consolidating the two elementary schools and repurposing the middle school, which is not a failing school, as a campus for Sheridan Technical College, a vocational school.
Superintendent Howard Hepburn said the proposal is in response to the district’s inability to fund schools with low enrollment. The district’s data showed that closing one elementary school saved nearly $2 million and the middle school more than $4 million.
“Every dollar should strengthen instruction, expand programs, and enhance the learning environments where our students thrive,” Hepburn said.
