Florida sex offender accused of faking his own death to flee to Indiana

Gary W. Howard The U.S. Marshals announced arresting Gary W. Howard, a Florida sex offender who had absconded and was hiding in Indiana.

Gary W. Howard, a designated sex offender for life in Florida, faked his own death to flee to Indiana, according to federal officials.

The U.S. Marshals Service announced Howard was arrested on Thursday in Indianapolis, where he was awaiting extradition to Florida.

Howard, who was convicted of 22 counts of possession of child pornography in 2007 in Pinellas County, vanished in 2010.

Investigators accused Howard of staging his suicide when he abandoned an Enterprise rental vehicle in the area of Mauzy Lake in Morganfield, Kentucky.

“This arrest exemplifies the tenacity and determination of Deputy U.S. Marshals and our task force partners to bring every fugitive to Justice,” William Berger Sr., U.S. Marshal for the Middle District of Florida, said in a statement. “You can run, you can hide, but law enforcement never stops hunting those who defy it – justice has a way of catching up to those who run from it.”
