New 911 calls reveal moments leading up to deputy shooting in north Florida

911 calls released after St. Johns deputy shooting

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Newly-released 911 calls reveal the moments leading up to, and the moments after, shots are fired by a north Florida deputy at a man whom authorities had opened fire on a victim.

The victim was miraculously able to escape the shooter on foot while being shot at over a dozen times.

On Tuesday, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call and could hear yelling in the background, followed by gunshots. It was later determined that the suspect made the call.

The suspect can be heard taunting, then eventually shooting at the victim. Deputies say the victim was shot at more than a dozen times, but fortunately, he was able to flag down a passing driver and got away uninjured.

Deputies identified the suspect as Kristopher Johnson from St. Augustine.

They say that after the victim was able to escape, Johnson jumped in the victim’s abandoned car, trying to track him down.

Deputies were able to eventually stop the car with a PIT maneuver. Johnson was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Detectives continue to investigate what led up to this shooting, but have learned Johnson and the victim agreed to meet at the location and the victim was not expecting an altercation.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating; both deputies involved were placed on administrative leave in the meantime.
