Semi-tractor-trailer truck with frozen fish catches on fire on I-95 in Broward

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – A semi-tractor-trailer truck with frozen fish caught on fire Thursday afternoon along the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Southwest 10th Street in Broward County.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue, after the truck caught fire a fuel tank leaked diesel fuel.

“Dark smoke billowed into the sky which could be seen from as far away as Fort Lauderdale,” Battalion Chief Michael B. Kane said in a statement. “Firefighters used foam to snuff out the fire and suppress the vapors to prevent reigniting.”

Kane said the driver was not injured. Deputies shut down traffic for hours while crews worked to clear what was left of the truck.

“Fortunately, the driver had the forethought and wherewithal to safety maneuver the semi to the shoulder, away from traffic which undoubtedly assisted firefighters in a rapid extinguishment and reduced the risk to nearby motorists,” Kane said.
