Elderly woman extricated from medical transport van following crash in Miami

MIAMI ā€“ An elderly woman who uses a wheelchair was trapped inside a medical transport van Friday morning following a car crash in Miami.

Miami police said two vehicles, a white SUV and the medical transport van, were involved in the collision just before 7:20 a.m. at the intersection of Northwest Third Court and Sixth Street.

ā€œIt appears that the van was traveling in the southbound direction while the other vehicle was going into the westbound direction. Thatā€™s when they collided,ā€ Officer Kenia Fallat said. ā€œWe donā€™t know which of the two were the ones that violated the traffic control device here at this intersection. We do know that one of the vehicles came to a final rest about 300 feet from the initial crash.ā€

Authorities said southbound lanes of Northwest Third Court were shut down from Northwest Fifth Street to Seventh Street as crews worked to extricate the woman from the vehicle.

She was eventually freed from the van and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she is listed in serious but stable condition.

Police said the driver of the van sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the SUV was not injured, authorities said.

Itā€™s unclear whether any of the drivers will be cited.
