SURFSIDE, Fla. — South Florida leaders and Surfside victim family members are calling for condo reform during a special session on Thursday morning.

Last month the Florida state legislature completed its session without reaching an agreement on legislation that was brought about in response to the collapse that was meant to improve safety and prevent another similar tragedy.

The amount of money that will be saved on not keeping buildings safe, will be spent on funerals and medical expenses, let’s do the right thing and work together,” Martin Langesfeld, who lost his sister and brother-in-law in the Surfside condo collapse said.

The lawmakers and people gathered here today called on Gov. Ron DeSantis to put condo reform on its agenda for next week’s special legislative session and to hopefully get something passed.

“We’re not here to tell them how to do it or what to do it, just that they should do it. If they care enough about making sure, never another Surfside tragedy,” Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz said.

During the legislative session, lawmakers were close to making an agreement but ultimately did not decide on one.

Lawmakers are hoping during the special legislative session they can get something done.
