Longtime South Florida-based convenience store chain sold to Texas outfit

Tom Thumb food stores, which have dotted South Florida for nearly 60 years, have been sold.

HIALEAH, Fla. — Tom Thumb food stores, which have dotted South Florida for nearly 60 years, have been sold.

Kent Kwik Convenience Stores out of Texas announced that it has bought the Hialeah-based Tom Thumb Food Stores, inc.

Tom Thumb was founded in 1964 by Tom Smith and his son-in-law, Jim McCarthy.

They started with a single store in Miami, and there are now 14 Tom Thumb locations from Fort Lauderdale to Key West.

“I have always admired their business model, leadership, and community support. I am honored that they would entrust their legacy to our company,” said Bill Kent, owner and Chairman of the Kent Companies.

Tom Thumb will join Kent Kwik’s 88 company-owned stores and 152 dealer sites in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Tennessee and North Carolina.
