MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — An 18-year-old man is accused of stabbing his roommate inside their northwest Miami-Dade home as the victim was sleeping, authorities confirmed.
The stabbing was reported shortly before noon Wednesday in the 8100 block of Northwest Seventh Street.
According to the suspect’s arrest report, he and the victim sleep on separate couches in the living room while other people who share the apartment sleep in the bedrooms.
Miami-Dade police said the victim was sleeping on his designated couch when Christian Pablo Perez-Mazaira grabbed a folding knife from his bag and attacked the victim, stabbing him multiple times in the face and torso.
According to the report, the victim was unarmed and had not done anything to provoke the attack.
Police said the other roommates intervened and Perez-Mazaira fled the scene, still holding the knife.
The victim was transported to a hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and hospital staff discovered that one of the stab wounds had punctured one of his lungs.
According to the report, Perez-Mazaira later sought assistance from bystanders in the area of Northwest 25th Street and 82nd Avenue, telling them that someone had tried to rob him and that he had to stab them in self-defense.
Police said the bystanders called police and Perez-Mazaira reiterated the story to officers and showed them where he had discarded the knife.
Perez-Mazaira was then transported to the police station for further questioning and was ultimately arrested on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.
As of Friday morning, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in lieu of a $100,000 bond.
