KENDALL, Fla. – A 21-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after leaving his gun inside his backpack at a school where he worked in Kendall, authorities confirmed Wednesday.

Nicholas Alexander Roman was an employee at Atlantis Academy, located at 9600 SW 107th Ave. in Kendall, but has since been fired, school officials confirmed.

According to his arrest report, the administrative assistant had been sent to another school Tuesday for administration training when the school director spotted his backpack on the floor underneath his assigned desk.

Police said the director, identified on the school’s website as TeriAnn Mann, claims that she had previously reprimanded Roman for bringing a pocket knife on campus, so she decided to search his backpack since the school has a policy that states they have the right to search people and property brought onto school grounds.

According to the report, she said she opened the bag and found the handgun and a black switch blade.

Police said she then notified law enforcement and Roman was taken into custody in the 6100 block of Northwest 87th Avenue.

Roman invoked his right not to speak with detectives without an attorney present, the report stated.

According to the school’s website, Atlantis Academy is a special education private school for “students with learning differences and various abilities.”

“These students, they have special needs so they might not even put it together and say, ‘Hey, what is this?’ and then fire it,” parent Angela Saxton told Local 10 News.

Roman was no longer appearing in the jail database on Wednesday.
