South Florida community comes together to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Parade, 5K held in Miami on MLK Day

MIAMI – The South Florida community came together again Monday for the 47th annual MLK Day Parade in Miami, honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“I’m so glad that this day we can think about Dr. King and all that he has done to bring people together,” Miami resident Courtney Barron said ahead of the start of the parade.

The parade started at Northwest 54th Street and 10th Avenue, with over 100 floats, marching bands, exotic cars and more.

As people lined the streets ahead of kickoff, events were happening in and around the parade route.

On Northwest 62nd Street and 25th Avenue, the pre-parade MLK 5K Fitness Walk/Run was held.

“MLK Day is very important to me,” 5K participant Elena Carrey-Walker said. “I wanted to honor his legacy, so I wanted to find something that was proactive to do and I thought that this is a great thing to do and it’s for a good cause.”

Over 100 runners made their way out for the 41st annual event, getting a celebratory and remembrance run in, in honor of the late and great Civil Rights icon.

“It just gives us an opportunity to reflect on MLK and all he’s done for us and what he means to this community,” Progressive Officers Club President Evan Lee said. “It’s just a day of giving.”
