Weight loss drugs may improve mood

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – New data links weight loss drugs to a reduced risk of mental health problems.

Researchers looked at 4 million patients who took drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro.

Patients were between 45% and 65% less likely to be diagnosed with depression.

They were also 44% to 65% less likely to have anxiety.

The results, which may be tied to positive feelings from weight loss, come weeks after a preliminary FDA review found no evidence linking the drugs to suicidal thoughts.

STUDY FINDS LINK BETWEEN ORAL AND MENTAL HEALTH

On the subject of mental health, researchers in Japan have found a link between oral health, nutrition, and psychological well-being.

“It absolutely makes sense. If someone’s mouth is not in their greatest condition they may not feel good about themselves, their social interactions may be poor their social economic status may not be where they’re at, can’t hold or obtain new jobs so I definitely see a correlation,” said Boca Raton Dentist Dr. Geoffrey Morris.

Morris says the study found that poor oral health can affect nutritional status which, in turn, impacts mood.

COVID DRUG AFFORDABILITY

Efforts are underway to make sure  Americans can afford a  key Covid treatment.

The drug costs around $1,400 for a five-day supply.

The Health and Human Services secretary said some patients are being charged high co-pays or even the full price at the pharmacy counter.

He reminded pharmacy leaders that the drug is free for people on Medicare and Medicaid and it’s also free for uninsured individuals.

People with commercial insurance can pay for it through a co-pay assistance program.
