Authorities investigate oil spill in Fort Lauderdale’s New River

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – An oil spill was spotted in Fort Lauderdale’s New River on Monday. Authorities spent the day trying to get to the bottom of its source.

Sky 10 was above the water near Southeast Sixth Street and Las Olas Boulevard around 12:15 p.m. as boats were driving through the spill in the water.

“This morning, at approximately 10:58 am, FLPD’s Marine Unit located what appeared to be fuel in the water near the 500 block of E Las Olas Blvd.,” Fort Lauderdale police Detective Ali Adamson said in an email to Local 10 News. “Officers were able to follow the fuel along the New River however, due to the outgoing tide, they were unable to determine the source of the spill.”

According to Adamson, the U.S. Coast Guard was notified about the spill and the Department of Environmental Protection responded to further assess the waterway.

The U.S. Coast Guard later said, as it continued to investigate the source of the spill, that the oil appeared to be dispersing with the tide Monday evening.
