Lauderhill man accused of shooting suburban Chicago cop ‘numerous times’

OAK LAWN, Ill. – A Lauderhill man is facing an attempted murder charge in Illinois after police said he shot an off-duty police sergeant working a private security detail at a suburban Chicago trucking company Monday.

Khambrel Lee shot the Oak Lawn police sergeant, whose name hasn’t been released, “numerous times,” according to authorities.

Lee, 35, works for the trucking company in question, according to an Oak Lawn Police Department news release, and engaged in a “violent, armed confrontation” with the sergeant and another security guard.

Chicago ABC affiliate WLS reports that Lee fired five rounds, striking the sergeant twice in his bulletproof vest and once in the leg.

The sergeant and the other security officer were able to take Lee into custody after his gun jammed, the station reports.

Lee purchased the gun, a Springfield Armory XD45, legally in Florida, authorities said.

Police said in an interview, Lee “alluded to the fact that God and his gun jamming are the only (reasons) our sergeant wasn’t shot in the head.”

Authorities said Lee has an extensive criminal history here in the Sunshine State, including arrests for domestic violence, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and drug charges.

“Our sergeant is indeed still here with us today by the grace of God, a Kevlar vest and the bravery of his actions, never backing down even after being shot and the bravery of the other security guard,” Oak Lawn police said in a news release.

Lee was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
