Travelers on cruises in the Caribbean are receiving changes to their itineraries because of the political unrest in Haiti.

Royal Caribbean is temporarily suspending visits to Labadee, Haiti. The cruise line has a private destination at Labadee.

The company sent the following statement to Local 10 News on Thursday: “The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority. Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we are temporarily making adjustments to sailings visiting Labadee. We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly.”

Local 10 News also reached out to Carnival Cruise Line. The company said it does have any ports of call in Haiti.

The changes come after Prime Minister Ariel Henry said he would resign on Tuesday, and international officials announced the creation of a transitional council.

In recent weeks, gangs have torched police stations, forced the closure of Haiti’s international airports and stormed the country’s biggest prisons, freeing more than 4,000 inmates.

Several people have been killed, and the United Nations says more than 15,000 Haitians have been left homeless by the recent violence.
