Law enforcement in Miami-Dade County gather to honor fallen heroes

DORAL, Fla. – Law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty are being remembered this month.

May is the month where people across the nation remember those who have sacrificed their lives to keep their communities safe, and on Wednesday, the Miami-Dade Police Department held a Project Hero event in Doral to do just that.

Officers from departments around the county gathered for Law Enforcement Appreciation Month, which started Wednesday and is a time to remember the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers in the United States.

Wednesday, at cemeteries in our area, fallen officers were visited at their burial sites and resting locations, where markers, like the American flag lined with blue, were placed nearby to recognize their sacrifice of keeping our communities safe.

In the history of Miami-Dade County, a total of 169 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty through the end of 2023.

Law enforcement present Wednesday said they wanted to show the fallen officers’ families that we never forget our fallen heroes.

“And, most importantly, to send that message to the family that they have never been forgotten, that we are here for them always, and we appreciate their service and, more importantly, their sacrifice,” Miami-Dade Police Deputy Director Chris Krothers said.

We are told more events will be going on throughout the month to continue to honor those in law enforcement.
