Teen motorcyclist killed in crash near Dolphin Mall

SWEETWATER, Fla. – A 17-year-old boy riding a motorcycle was killed after crashing into a panel van in Sweetwater Monday afternoon, according to police.

The crash happened at around 4 p.m. in the area of Northwest 112th Avenue and 20th Street, a few blocks northeast of the Dolphin Mall.

Video from Sky 10 showed Sweetwater and Miami-Dade police at the scene, with a yellow tarp covering the victim’s body near the crashed motorcycle.

Police said the 29-year-old woman driving the van remained at the scene.

Authorities haven’t publicly identified the victim or said what led up to the crash.

“We’re working to determine exactly who’s at fault, via different measurements and investigative techniques,” Miami-Dade police Detective Andre Martin, an agency spokesperson, said.

Friends of the teen said he attended J.C. Bermudez Doral Senior High School.

“He was always smiling. Loved motorsports. Loved his family, for sure,” a friend told Local 10 News. “I didn’t believe it. We didn’t want to believe it. He was my classmate. We grew up together. He was an amazing kid.”

Officers closed down a portion of Northwest 112th Avenue during the investigation.
