‘About time he got caught’: Relative of Keys pastor accused of sex crime fears more victims out there

Baptist pastor Monte Chitty back in court Monday

MARATHON, Fla. – Pastor and accused child sex criminal Monte Chitty faced a Monroe County judge again Monday, a little more than two weeks after the 62-year-old returned to the Keys following his capture in Texas.

Chitty is accused of plying a 15-year-old girl with alcohol and then sexually battering her while unconscious at his church, First Baptist Marathon. Deputies said he sent her lewd text messages afterward acknowledging the assault.

Authorities said they also found troubling web searches, including, “How to make sex for a virgin less painful.”

Local 10 News is now speaking to a relative of Chitty’s, who fears that teenager isn’t his only victim.

“He started out with this family — doing this to his family,” that relative, who didn’t want to be identified, said.

She says about a decade ago, she sent her daughter to live with Chitty in a small town in Alaska to escape trouble.

Chitty was a pastor and worked as a law enforcement officer there.

“She hadn’t been there but maybe a week...she got up there in the night to use the restroom and he comes out and he was talking nasty to her,” the relative said. “It scared her and she took off.”

The Anchorage Daily News reported that parishioners chipped in to fly her out of town.

What happened isn’t clear. Local 10 News was told the daughter was too disturbed to disclose it.

“Did she feel like she could call the authorities about him?” Local 10 News reporter Janine Stanwood asked Chitty’s relative.

“No,” she replied. “He was the authorities!”

A judge revoked Chitty’s bond after he skipped his arraignment last month and escaped to Texas.

Local 10 News was there as he returned to the Monroe County jail.

Chitty, who told a judge he doesn’t “have any means to hire a private attorney,” is expected to formally plea not guilty.

“I am very grateful that there is some justice finally,” the relative told Local 10 News. “I’m hoping he’ll never get out. Ever.”

Chitty’s arraignment has been continued until the end of the month.

He’s facing charges of sexual battery of a minor, lewd and lascivious conduct and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
