911 calls released following deadly, fiery crash in Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Authorities have released 911 calls from concerned witnesses related to a fiery wreck in Hollywood.

The crash caused a car to smash into a brick wall before it burst into flames.

It happened on Sunday at the intersection of Sheridan Street and North 40th Avenue.

“You can’t miss the smoke, you just can’t miss the smoke,” one called stated. “Oh my goodness.”

Several people in the busy intersection stopped to call for help, inside the burning car a driver trapped.

Family identified the driver who died as 49-year-old Douglas Freeman.

Earlier this week, Local 10 News interviewed two of his sisters.

“He had just taken his girlfriend out for Mother’s Day,” said Sharon Grant, the victim’s sister. “Dropped her off and was heading home.”

Freeman was a navy veteran, a beloved barber, and was currently working as a truck driver. He was also a father of seven children.

“He made your day,” said Ramona Harper, the victim’s sister. “Anybody that he came in contact with, he was loved by so many.”

Before the crash, video obtained by Local 10 News from a passing driver showed a white car weaving in and out of traffic.

That same car was later seen turned on its side before it was towed away. The driver of that vehicle was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

It is unclear what exactly caused the crash.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
