DAVIE, Fla. – Every step counted at the Broward County March for Babies walk at Nova Southeastern University.
The annual walk was held Saturday morning at the Nova Southeastern University campus.
The walk, put on by the March of Dimes, is a community-driven effort to raise awareness and funds to help improve the health of moms and babies not only locally, but nationwide. Many were recognized and honored, including the Swaby family.
Their baby, Dereon, was born at only 25 weeks and spent 94 days in the neonatal intensive care unit at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood.
“When Dereon came, I didn’t know what to expect and every day to day was touch and go. So I didn’t know what to expect. I’m so grateful he’s at this big size that he is now, healthy, thriving, reaching many of his milestones,” his mom, Brittney Mordan, said. “It just means a lot to me to advocate for moms and maternal health and premature babies because of my journey. I have a passion for it now that I didn’t have before.”
Dereon is now a happy 3-year-old. Mordan is studying to become a NICU nurse where she gave birth.
March of Dimes is still fundraising to reach its goal. For information about how you can help, visit the charity’s website.
