PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Residents across South Florida are enjoying the beautiful weather Monday while observing Memorial Day.
In Pembroke Pines, the annual Memorial Day event was attended by dozens of families and veterans alike.
Noon report:
The day is an important reminder for Air Force veteran George Koren, and the rest of South Florida, that Memorial Day isn’t just a three-day weekend.
“It’s out of respect,” said Koren. “The people that have gone before us that we’re honoring, they’re the pillars which we now stand.”
It’s a day to remember the fallen who paid a hefty price for our freedom.
Not far away in nearby Davie, dozens dressed in patriotic colors and celebrated those who served and are still serving with a fun, festive parade.
“Memorial Day, Fourth of July, we always dress up,” said parade visitor Najla Dahan. ”Me and my mom -- she is 90 years old.”
Celebrations were also underway in Miami Beach, where residents gathered at an event hosted by the city.
“The men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation, they are heroes,” said Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones.
Whether it’s remembering those who have passed or members who are still serving, one thought rings true on this Memorial Day.
“Thank you for your service, and without you, who knows where we might be today,” said Koren.
