South Florida spellers compete in Scripps National Spelling Bee

Two South Florida students have advanced in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

13-year-old Nikhil Sha is from Miami, representing Miami Palmetto Middle School and 12-year-old Hadi Abbasi is from Pembroke pines, representing Franklin Academy Pembroke Pines - Middle School.

According to the Scripps website, Nikhil likes to play games and read books. He also codes in multiple programming languages and likes to complete coding problems. He finds joy in playing the piano, which he has been doing for six years now.

Hadi is a curious and adventurous child who loves exploring the worlds of math, history and science. He enjoys learning about historical battles and war strategies and in his free time, he plays “Minecraft.”

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the spelling bee. Since the first competition, millions of students have competed.

The competition, sponsored by the Miami Herald, will run through Thursday, May 29.

Last year’s winner, a 12-year-old from St. Petersburg, Florida, Bruhat Soma won $50,000.

Bruhat’s winning word was “abseil.”
