NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A smirking Maya Gibbs was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center early Friday morning on a serious charge: North Miami Beach police arrested her on a count of first-degree arson after they say she set a home on fire over a feud with a roommate.
Authorities said Gibbs, 28, set fire to the home at 1300 NE 180th St. just before 5:45 p.m. Thursday.
An arrest report states that Gibbs alerted her roommates to the fire, but investigators determined she set it ― and allegedly made an admission.
The report states that Gibbs has a “history of conflict” with one of her roommates, including a verbal dispute over $200 one month prior and another over her roommate’s use of the Spanish word “negra” ― “Black woman” ― to describe her, which police said was “mistakenly interpreted” as a racial slur.
Authorities said they took Gibbs into custody.
She remained at TGK as of Friday afternoon with a bond listed in jail records as “to be set.”
