MIAMI – Miami’s own global music icon is back.
Gloria Estefan sat down with Local 10’s Christian De La Rosa to talk about her new music.
“Putting some positive vibes back out,” she said.
Raices, meaning “roots” in Spanish, is her 30th album in a career spanning 50 years.
She described the lyrics to one of the songs on her new album and the meaning behind them.
“It means that when you plant something you have to do it right, for us doing it right is with love,” she said.
Her new music is her first Spanish album in nearly two decades.
“I think we need to say, ‘we’re proud of who we are, we’re proud of our language you can’t stop us from speaking it or singing it,’” Estefan said.
The Conga beat queen says Raices is a love letter to her family, and her Miami roots.
“In this album cover, I recreated my mom’s picture with me here, first place we lived in Miami,” she said.
The lyrics were written by iconic music producer and husband of forty plus years, Emilio Estefan.
“He has written the album of his career,” she said.
Estefan said she’s also hoping to bring joy with the new album, especially to the Latino community.
“Latinos are getting a bum rap in the press, we’re being villainized just because someone wants to come to this great country that’s built by immigrants in order to work hard, to be able to give their families a better life,” she said.
